Day 8 Rejection Therapy: Get Number One Spot in Best Buy’s Thanksgiving Line

It’s Thanksgiving! Yes, you get in line for 5 hours hoping to grab the 80% discount on a laptop. However, I bet you have never been number one in line before. Do you know how it feels to be number one? Do you know what it takes? No, I don’t have what it takes to get it, but I am trying to acquire what it takes to ask for it. This is the beauty of rejection therapy. If I get a ‘yes’, then I get an 80” TV for $100. If I get a ‘no’, then it’s the musical sound of success.

I was confident that I could at least carry a conversation with the #1 guy, but when the #2 guy jumped in pointing at the rules on the wall, the battle was lost. You don’t want to negotiate with two or more people who sacrificed their entire Thanksgiving and half to be at the front of the line when Best Buy opens its door.

Learning: one vs many negotiation is much harder to carry out than one vs one. When making a crazy request, one is better off being in an isolated 1 on 1 setting.

I’m here thanks to Reddit too. I really like the idea, because they are quite funny videos, but at the same time they are not of a guy being an asshole to everyone in public, but of a guy being polite and showing how friendly and helpful people are, even when they are asked for crazy things.

Good Job, and great idea. I’ll definitely follow through the journey.

there are a lot of great ideas on here for you, jia. i struggle with high anxiety, panic attacks and depression. i can tell you one thing that does it to me ALL THE TIME: job interviews! talk about rejections! i didn’t see anyone suggest it and i don’t know if it’s on your list. to make it interesting, you should go to a job fair with a really lame resume and apply with everyone, no matter what they’re looking for – even better, apply for the company’s highest available positions that you would obviously not qualify for. have fun with it by pretending you are someone other than yourself, like maybe you are a bored millionaire who gave away all your money or an ex-con that was in for impersonating a pilot or something like that. i would LOVE to see you catch that on video!

This is cool and fun :) This is very impressive and not for faint hearts.

Interesting personal story to share about Black Friday sale. On thanksgiving in 2010, I successfully partnered with # 1 spot guy to let me buy a TV to save $800 (minus $100). But it wasn’t exactly getting the # 1 spot :)
